Issues and dialogue from the campaign trail: These are some of the issues the citizens have addressed to me while on the campaign trail. The answers are not intended to be comprehensive but are intended to begin the dialogue on the subjects of importance to citizens.

Question:
Why are you running?

Answer:
We face major challenges in the next several years that will define us as a leader in addressing the growth or it will overwhelm us. We need comprehensive city planning and thoughtful execution or the growth and traffic in particular will define us in a negative way.  I believe my experience, education and commitment to effective planning will serve me well in addressing the major planning decisions which need to be made for our city by the Kyle City Council.

Question:
What is the city going to do about the traffic? It is really getting heavy and it takes me lots of time just to move around the city. I am burning gasoline waiting in lines to go to work or return home from Austin where I work.

Answer: The city has a full cooperative partner in Hays County Precinct 2 Commissioner Jeff Barton which needs to be maintained to maximize both State of Texas dollars available for match for roads projects and county funds. We have an opportunity in the coming months to make the investment in improving our transportation in Kyle by passing a bond issue to complete I H 35 improvements to make our access roads one way with turnarounds on the bridges, finance improvements to FM 150 east and FM 1626 improvements, and improvements on Dacy Lane.

The City of Kyle, using its own funding, needs to do innovative planning to improve the flow of traffic within the city to the HEB Marketplace area with the enhancement of Burleson Road. Planning for alternative traffic flow to the north and south will be critical to keep us from having to wait in lines in slow moving traffic.

Question:
What is the city doing about acquiring access to water in the future and the quality of the water in our Kyle system?

Answer:
The City of Kyle has taken the initiative to acquire the water resources for our future. We have put together neighboring cities and water districts to acquire water from the Carrizo Wilcox Aquifer and contracted for water with Greater Blanco River Authority. Our current agreements with the City of San Marcos for processing water that comes through San Marcos facilities, has improved the quality of the water in the Kyle System to some degree but we must set the highest water quality standards and strive to meet them in the future.

Question:
How do we keep that small town charm?

Answer: We need to keep on the path of treasuring our historical sites and traditions. We need to also emphasize planning for both green spaces and hike and bike trails. We need to continue to support the renovation of the old town business district and add to the streetscape.  We need to fully support the Kyle Market Days as a way of keeping the small town market tradition while providing an opportunity for citizens to interact with one another in a festival atmosphere.

Question:
What has taken such a long time to renovate the old Kyle City Hall for use by the public and the seniors?

Answer: By waiting the three years to proceed with the renovation of the historic Kyle City Hall, we have already escalated the cost of renovation.  It is time to move on this project. The delays have already cost the taxpayers many hundreds of thousands of dollars in increased cost of renovation that would have not been necessary if the project was started on time.

Question:
The library is very small for a city this size. What is being done to expand it?

Answer: The city has been in the planning phases to determine a site for a new library for a number of years.  As of the city council meeting of April 1, the city council made the decision to continue the site selection and planning process.  We must move on this project in a quality way. Kyle has a unique literary heritage to both preserve and promote as we are the home of the Pulitzer Prize winning author, Katherine Ann Porter. A quality library facility is needed to support that heritage and promote Kyle as a literary destination.

Question:
Are you a business friendly candidate?

Answer: Yes, I am business friendly! I joined the Kyle Chamber of Commerce a number of years ago to support our home grown businesses as well as attract new businesses. I am very happy that the city has shed the reputation of being business unfriendly with the positive press we received recently in the Austin Business Journal. Yes, I support quality businesses for our city as well as businesses that will produce good jobs for our citizens.

Question:
What are you going to do for kids?

Answer: I am a major supporter of our Parks and Recreation effort in Kyle. I have respect for city staff working in the department and support the very comprehensive plan for recreation for both children and adults. When I am elected, I will continue to support Parks and Recreation.

I want to see the hike and bike trail linkage between subdivisions all over town as a healthy recreational alternative for both children and adults. From a safety perspective, the concept should help to keep hike and bike recreation off of the city streets.

I believe the planned expansion of the library is also an important activity for our children.
